Need I say that I am obsessed with succulents? I spent some fun time on Pinterest a while back, and I saw some really cool succulent plants. It gave me succulent fever, and I started thinking about how I can incorporate more of these strange plants into my life. As you can probably tell from my last DIY tutorial, I love fun ear studs. My thoughts immediately went to: How can I make succulent earrings? After scouting my studio (a.k.a. my garage), I found some self-hardening clay and a few pottery tools- and got to testing out if I can actually make them- and guess what…it worked out pretty great! So, here we go: clay succulent earrings DIY:
All you really need is some clay and a few tools. An old knife will do just fine, too. I used my fingers as a primary “tool” to do most of the molding anyway. But to keep it simple and organized, let me give you a full list of what you will need:
clay
tools (a knife or an exacto blade will work), teasing needle or a needle can be helpful with molding
earring posts (you can get these at a crafting store or online)
paint (I used watercolor, but acrylic would work fine, too)
jewelry/krazy glue
Start with cutting out a few pentagon shapes. Mold them to start the center (below):
Keep adding these shapes one by one. I played with each “petal” individually to make it look natural. This is actually easier (and quicker) than it looks. It’s just about some practice and figuring out how to mold it right. Either way, playing with clay is very therapeutic!
Once you are done with your flower, just slice it off with an exacto blade.
Time to paint! I used watercolors because {well, if you are a regular reader, you will know- if you are a new reader (welcome), see here.} Succulents have a variety of green shades- I picked a rich yellow-green and then I frosted the rim with a purple hue. Go ahead, though, and put your own spin on it!
After the paint has dried (give it a few hours), glue the posts on and you are done!
The earrings are pretty big, but hey- so are succulents! Anybody else is obsessed with this plant?
Have fun making your succulent earrings- and let me know if you have any questions about the process- I will be happy to help out!
Love, Marketa
