Aloha! Although I have never been to Hawaii, I at least got to “travel” there virtually, through these Hawaii wedding maps that I created for my client. I live vicariously through my artwork, so creating this wedding map felt like I was exploring the island of Kauai a little bit. At least I have something to guide me when I actually go, right? I had a lot of fun creating this map, as painting maps is one of my absolute favorite things to do. Because maps. Coupled with cute little illustrations. The artist and the traveler in me soars.
I don’t quite remember the first wedding map that I painted…there have been quite a few over the years (!) and it got me thinking about all the places I want to visit some day. Most of the maps that I am commissioned to create are of really cool and exotic locations (like tropical islands, really cool cities and beautiful natural landmarks) so I have been creating a mental travel list of all the places I want to visit. And Hawaii definitely makes the list! I typically do quite a bit of research before I start the painting, so I geek out on various inspiration images of each location. And I was in absolute awe on how beautiful Kauai is…I mean, is the Na Pali Coast even real? The ocean, the lush greens, and the incredible mountains…I am totally in love!
Another really cool thing about creating these maps is that I get to learn about all the hidden gems and famous landmarks- like local favorite coffee shops, best bars and restaurants. So, when I am actually there, I have a few tips on where to eat and shop!
These Hawaii wedding maps were included along with the wedding invitation (which I designed as well- more on that soon!). I think sending out a wedding map insert along with an invitation is such a cool way to get wedding guests excited for the wedding. And if they are like me, they can start planning all the cool things they can see and visit during their stay. And also- the maps are so cute that unlike other wedding paper that sometimes ends up in trash (looking at you, boring wedding programs), these are an absolute keeper. I even had a bunch of people frame their wedding maps for their house!
